MONROE COUNTY, Ga. — A Macon woman, 41, was killed and three others were hurt during a car crash in Monroe County Thursday morning, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.
It happened on Highway 42 North near Boxankle Road at around 7 a.m.
Based on what they know right now, they say it appears an SUV was heading north on Highway 42 when they ran off the road, overcorrected and veered into the southbound lane. That's when the sheriff's office says the SUV struck a Chevy sedan driving southbound.
Coroner Joey Proctor says that the crash caused serious damage.
"Both vehicles were in pretty bad shape," Proctor said. "It was as close to a direct head-on collision as I've ever seen."
The sheriff's office says the SUV's driver was pronounced dead on the scene. Two of the SUV's passengers were taken to a Macon hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the Chevy sedan was life-flighted by helicopter to an Atlanta hospital while their passenger was taken to the hospital but is expected to survive, the press release said.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office says that the accident is under investigation at this time.
Proctor says that they are not naming the victim at this time as they work to notify the next of kin.
