GREENE COUNTY, Georgia — A former Sparta police officer has been arrested and charged after allegedly breaking into a home in Greensboro and fighting the residents inside, according to a release from the GBI.

Taliaferro County Sheriff’s Office Deputy 29-year-old Joshua Wilson has been charged with Home Invasion in the 1st Degree, Aggravated Assault, Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Felony, Simple Battery (Family Violence), Obstructing or Hindering a Person Making an Emergency Telephone Call and Criminal Damage to Property in the 2nd Degree.

The charges stem from a home invasion on Sept. 5 at a home in Greensboro, Georgia. Greene County deputies responded to a domestic violence call in the 1000 block of McInteer Circle at 5 a.m. The GBI was called in two hours later to assist with the investigation.

The release says Wilson entered the home and got into a fight with the people inside. Wilson was off-duty at the time. He later turned himself in to the Greene County Sheriff’s Office.

Wilson was a part-time officer with the Sparta Police Department from May 17, 2023, until he resigned on Aug. 23 this year, according to his record from POST. He has held more than 10 jobs over the last 10 years, including about three months with the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office in 2015.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call the GBI regional investigative office in Milledgeville at 478-445-4173. Anonymous tips can also be submitted by calling 1-800-597-TIPS (8477), online at https://gbi.georgia.gov/submit-tips-online, or by downloading the See Something, Send Something mobile app.

Once the investigation is complete, the case file will be given to the Ocmulgee Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
