FOREST PARK, Ga. — A suspect is now in custody following a shooting that killed one and injured two in Forest Park on Friday. The incident sparked a citywide lockdown that lasted for hours.
Forest Park Police Department said Victor Baymon was taken into custody in Cobb County after a brief chase and an hours-long manhunt. Police released the name of the victim who was shot dead on Saturday morning, identifying him as 43-year-old Brandon Harris.
Police said the two other victims had gone into surgery at hospitals and were recovering as of Friday night. A photo was released by Harris' family on Saturday.
The police department said Baymon is facing malice murder, armed robbery, hijacking of a motor vehicle, aggravated assault charges, and more could be added. He's currently in critical condition at the hospital; police said upon discharge, Baymon will be taken to the Clayton County Jail.
"Chief Brandon Criss and members of the Forest Park Police Department sincerely appreciate the help of all agencies with apprehending the suspect. Our agency remains committed to ensuring the safety and welfare of all of our citizens," according to a statement from Forest Park Police.
As of Friday evening, the lockdowns at schools and city buildings have been lifted.
In a press conference earlier in the day, Forest Park Police Chief Brandon Criss said Baymon followed his ex-girlfriend as she went to a tax preparation office -- ultimately shooting the individual preparing the taxes and then a worker inside a convenience store.
Criss said Baymon then carjacked a man, crashed that vehicle at an apartment complex about a block away, and then carjacked a woman. The chief said Baymon made it as far as the 4300 block of Jonesboro Road before he got out and shot a construction worker at random.
Flock cameras identified the vehicle involved in the carjacking outside of Forest Park, according to Powder Springs Police.
Officers initiated a chase that ended on Richard D. Sailors Parkway when the suspected vehicle lost control, hit a tree in the center median and caught fire. Firefighters were able to remove the suspect from the vehicle, and he was taken to a local hospital, Powder Springs Police added.
This is not Baymon's first run-in with police. A court found him guilty of eluding police in 2019 in a case the court found him not guilty of for several other charges. He spent three years in prison and was released in November 2022.
