Gov. Brian Kemp signed an executive order on Oct. 21 to lower flags to half-staff on Wednesday, Oct. 23, to honor the death of Houston County Sheriff Henry Cullen Talton, Jr., who was America's longest-tenured sheriff.

The order states that Talton was elected to the position in 1972 and served for nearly 52 years. Flags were ordered to be flown until sunset on Wednesday, the date of Talton's interment.
