Freedom Field opened its gates Friday night, and hundreds of Central Georgians flocked to the new stadium to watch the inaugural game between Eagle's Landing and Houston County High.
"I think the new football field is fantastic... it looks awesome, " said Houston County junior, Dariell Simmons.
The new facility in Warner Robins serves as the home field for both Veterans and Houston County High Schools. Friday night the Houston County Bears took on Eagle's Landing and christened the field.
"We traveled 90 miles just to watch the game tonight," says Houston County fan Wallace Twiggs.
Twiggs is the grandfather of a Houston County offensive guard. He says he's been cheering on his grandson for years and remembers what was here before Freedom Field.
"They had cows and pigs and horses out here for the students to study and so forth, and I've seen it transform into this beautiful facility," says Twiggs.
But the new facility is more than just visually pleasing.
"It didn't take them long to build. The bathrooms are really nice, the parking lot is really easy to get in and out of," says Houston County fan, Brooke Glover.
Houston County junior, Dariell Simmons, told me that Freedom Field has three gates, which is one more than was in their old stadium. She thinks this will ease accessibility and allow more fans to attend the games.
And for those fans that decide to give the new facility a try, there are over 6,000 seats for them to choose from, which is what Twiggs says that makes Freedom Field a "first rate" facility.
"I've been to college stadiums, and this will rival any of those I've seen," says Twiggs.
He is hopeful that the Bears make it all the way to the playoffs this season.
Next week, the the two teams that share Freedom Field, Houston County and Veterans High School, will face off at 8pm.
