LAURENS COUNTY, Ga. — It's been nearly two months since Hurricane Helene roared through several counties in Georgia, including Laurens County.
Now, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) still has a Disaster Recovery Center open in Laurens County for people who need assistance.
James Wood with FEMA says he wants everyone in the community to receive the help they need. Wood says they are looking to provide financial support and to help folks with their recovery process.
"A survivor should bring is any personal documentation, Social Security, deposit, any pertaining information regards to their home, primary residence records, anything that could help further their case along and make sure that they get the help that they need as soon as possible," Wood said.
He said FEMA has already approved more than 182,500 applications and more than $228.4 million for Georgians.
"To help lift these communities that have been impacted and to help return them to their pre-disaster state," Wood said.
Raymond Evans Jr. says after the storm his family was left without power for four days.
“All food was lost and the cleanup I've had to do just with personal property damage that happened with us,” Evans said.
It's why FEMA goes to affected communities after a disaster to set up shop and lend a hand.
Evans says after his family applied for assistance; They received a $1,000 check.
Wood says FEMA will stay in Laurens County until their help is no longer needed.
The FEMA Disaster Recovery Center is open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m.. It's on West Laurens School Road in Dublin.
