Farm animals allowed in Macon-Bibb

According to Macon-Bibb Animal Welfare, county ordinance allows people to own farm animals like pigs, goats, and chickens.

"It's like having a child. You should treat it as a child or anything else that's a part of your life. It takes a lot of care, especially the pigs and the goats. It's livestock, I have to check them constantly," Joe Zawacki said.

Owners must get permission from the Animal Welfare director. She'll do a site visit and make sure your neighbors are OK with it.

When a stray farm animal is found, animal welfare takes them in for 7 days and then will release them to a new owner.

Many of their farm animals go to Zawacki at The Dirt Farm on Wesleyan Drive.

"I take on what I can handle, and its a win-win situation. They get a happy life and I get another helper on the farm," Zawacki said.

So far, he's taken in Kristine the pig, Buzz the goat, a Duck, and even a few snakes. Zawacki says his pets are for his customers to enjoy, but they do some work, too.

"Everything on my farm has a job, so Kristine the pig helps root, tillage, and eat vegetation, and the goats do the same thing," Zawacki said.

He wants everyone to know if you have a farm animal, you better know how to take care of it.

"Even if you're using something for meat or something for eggs, it should live the happiest life it possibly can," Zawacki said.
