Bibb commissioners tabled the discussion about levee repairs at Tuesday's meeting, but plan to vote on the matter next week.
Back in 1994, owner David Cox says the Cox Café was almost entirely underwater.
The restaurant is less than a mile away from the levee, but he still says it’s a concern.
“I hope and pray that this Gordon coming doesn’t dump a bunch of rain on us like it did in ’94,” said Cox.
County engineer David Fortson says he has some serious concerns about the levee.
Fortson says a county employee started noticing sand boils forming in 2015, and they want to make efforts to fix them.
“A sand boil is where water is coming under the levee, up through the ground, and it brings soil with it. Eventually we could have a failure in the levee,” said Fortson.
In 1994, the levee failed after flood waters breached the levee, flooding both homes and businesses in Macon.
“The flood in 1994 was an extraordinary flood, and we hope we won’t see one like that in a long time, if not ever,” said Fortson.
Fortson says the seepage problem is not as severe as the flooding of 1994, but could cause a problem if not fixed.
Cox says he's upset with county spending, but when it comes to this, it's a necessity.
“Spend whatever you have to within a reasonable amount and that sounds reasonable to me. To keep people safe, not just businesses but livelihoods. People could get hurt,” said Cox.
Cox hopes the commissioners will hurry up and make a decision before the peak of hurricane season.
Fortson says repairs would cost over $800,000 and take up to 4 months to complete.
Fortson also says they already have a construction company ready to go if they receive the funding.
