'We try to accommodate' | Early voters facing accessibility issues at Macon Mall polling place

One of Macon-Bibb's three early-voting polling locations, the Macon Mall, has a few accessibility problems for handicapped voters.

MACON, Ga. — This week kicks off early voting for Georgia's Presidential Primary election

One of Macon-Bibb's three polling locations, the Macon Mall, has a few accessibility problems for handicapped voters.

Now, the Bibb County Board of Elections said they've made changes and accommodations, but some voters say they have to drive elsewhere just to vote.

Although early voter turnout hasn't been too high yet, there was a total of 245 people who have already cast their ballots since early voting started Monday.

Tom Gillon of Bibb County's Board of Elections said they've made some changes to help disabled voters.

"Whatever location is more convenient to the voters, we encourage them to vote there," Gillon said. "We have set up a little kiosk so that the elderly or handicapped don't have to walk quite as far to get to us and the other two locations are much more convenient as far as it being a shorter walk."

Angelia McLean is the election board's interim chief registrar and said this is the first time they're in election mode at their new facility. McLean says they are taking the time to make everything accessible to their voters.

"We try to accommodate the elderly and the disabled by making an area for them," McLean said. "Yesterday started off a little bumpy since we have new equipment and this is our first time back and in a new location, so we recognize it's kind of hard for them to walk this distance. It even took us a minute to get used to the walk, but the voters still come in here regardless and vote."

Gene Robinson has been living in Macon for over 70 years.

He went and voted early on Tuesday at the Elaine Lucas Senior Center with his friends.

After hearing about the Macon Mall's accessibility issues, he said it's a good improvement.

"That's a nice thing that they're making it possible for the unable people to vote so they can exercise their right like everybody else," Robinson said.

Robinson mentioned that in 1963, his school took him to the Grand Opera House where they registered to vote, and he's been voting consistently ever since.

"If I have to climb 10 flights of stairs, I'm going to vote," Robinson said. "If I have to go down deep in a tunnel, I'm going to vote. We earned the right to vote and I advise everybody to vote."

In Macon-Bibb County, you can also early vote at Theron Ussery Park in North Macon and the Elaine Lucas Senior Center at Central City Park.
