LAURENS COUNTY, Ga. — This week, we're highlighting some of Central Georgia's Great Grads. These are students that have faced great struggles, and through hard work, have come out on the other side.
Student Bryce Evans at East Laurens High School was close to dropping out, but now, he's about to walk across the graduation stage.
Evans says his mom was in and out of jail his whole life. Once he got older, he says he started driving people around town to earn money to send to his mom in jail.
He says at 14, being in school and supporting his mom at the same time started to become too much. He contemplated leaving school for good.
Luckily, two staff members stepped in, and got Evans a job at Dairy Queen, so he could support his mom and focus on school too.
"Walking back and knowing I'm starting a new life, and it's going to be better than what I left behind here, hoping I can provide even better for my family than what I can now," Evans said.
Today, Evans' mom is out of jail, and he's planning to go to massage therapy school in Atlanta. He graduates on May 31.
