This evening, hundreds of Dubliners gathered downtown to see their skyscraper illuminated.

The Dublin Skyscraper, as it's called, is now the home Georgia Military College's Dublin campus.

Dublin Mayor Phil Best led the crowd in a countdown before the lights turned on and fireworks started shooting off the roof.

The lights signify the completion of a roughly $5 million renovation of the building.

Best says the partnership with GMC will benefit the young people of Laurens County, and doing it in the historic building is an added bonus.

"That is icing on the cake," he says. "This building's been here for a long time, it's been vacant. Thank goodness GMC has said that they will be a partner with us in this building and this will eventually be their entire campus."

There will be a grand opening for Dublin's Skyscraper September 18 at 11 AM.

Governor Nathan Deal will be in attendance.

Classes start there October 10th.
