Dublin's Veterans Administration hospital says its wait times for care are close to those at other VA facilities nationwide.

But that still means that more than 6 out of 10 veterans new patients have to wait longer than two weeks for appointments.

And the average wait is nearly four weeks.

This comes amid reports of problems at the nation's VA hospitals that include long wait times for veterans seeking medical care.

Under a Freedom of Information act request, USA Today obtained statistics on wait times at the nation's 142 VA hospitals including the Carl A. Vinson Veterans Administration Medical Center in Dublin.

Here's what those numbers tell us:

The Vinson center reported that 38 percent of their new patients got appointments within 14 days. That's the VA's target nationwide.

And the Dublin hospital said the average new patient waited about 26 days to see a doctor. That's one day better than the national average.

They say that covers about 1.900 patients in Dublin between last October and this past March.

But those numbers come with a possible catch. The VA says it's investigating dozens of hospitals for allegedly falsifying their numbers.

That includes the hospital in Phoenix, Arizona, which said its wait time was just 24 days.

In reality, investigators said it was over four months. So some of those numbers nationwide may not be accurate.

USA Today says an audit released last week showed rampant fraud in keeping official appointment records. Some 13 percent of schedulers at 216 VA health facilities said they were instructed in how to falsify the wait times they reported to VA headquarters.

We plan to follow up to tell you more about patient care at the Dublin VA hospital.
