DUBLIN, Ga. — Dublin Police are working to find the driver who hit and killed two people on Mother's Day and then drove away from the scene.
Dublin Police said it happened around 10:42 p.m. Sunday night on the corner of East Garner Street and Carolyn Watson Street.
Robin William lives one street down, and he said there's always been a lot of speeding in the neighborhood.
"I even went to the council meeting about this thing issue last year. I believe in beautifying Dublin. But we need to also think about safety issues first and foremost," William said.
Sandra Taylor also lives in the neighborhood, and she said she hopes this is a wake up call for people who speed.
"If we had small children you know, how kids get away from their parents running- car coming down this street, they wouldn't have a chance," Taylor said.
Both women said they wish city officials would add safety features to slow drivers down.
Dublin city councilmember Bennie Jones said that street is on their list for future Project Slow Zone changes. Project Slow Zone is a neighborhood traffic calming program that aims to reduce speeding with things like speed cushions, and reduced speed limits.
Police Chief Keith Moon said they're looking at security footage from neighbors, and they're also using the city's Flock Safety cameras to assist them in the investigation.
"We're using Flock ALPR systems to try to narrow down the vehicles in this area between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. at night," Moon said.
He said it's rare to see two pedestrians hit during a hit-and-run.
"I can never remember in my time here that happening in this area," he said.
But he said unfortunately hit-and-runs in neighborhoods aren't so uncommon.
"It can happen anywhere. It can happen in congested neighborhoods like this. It could happen on highways," Moon said.
Dublin Police identified the victims as 40-year-old Clarissa Robinson from Dublin and 56-year-old Antonio Smith from East Dublin. Moon said they believe the two were walking together, but they don't believe either victim was from the neighborhood.
At this time, they are still investigating why the victims were in the neighborhood.
Laurens County Coroner Richard Stanley told us both victims were pronounced dead at the scene and their bodies are being sent to the a crime lab in Atlanta on Tuesday.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Laurens County 911 Center at 478-272-7985 or the Traffic Division at the Dublin Police Department 478-277-5023.
