MACON, Ga. — The Bibb County Sheriff's Office says they've arrested more than 20 people after a drug investigation that centered on several west Macon hotels.
Sheriff David Davis said the investigation started last year after more than 100 complaints about various crimes at several hotels in the Interstate 475-US 80 area.
Davis said the arrests also took more than 15 pounds of meth, heroin, marijuana and other drugs off the street.
The FBI collaborated in the investigation, which Davis called Operation Extended Stay.
He said their goal is to move the 20-plus suspects into "extended stay" jails and prisons.
Some of the businesses named by Davis: America's Best Inn, Bridgeview Hotel, Discovery Inn, Econo Inns & Suites and the Rodeway Inn.
Davis said they received 137 complaints over several months for drugs, shots fired, suspicious persons, sex offenses and other crimes at those and other hotels.
"The drug-selling business has evolved. We're seeing it more and more in the hotel settings," he said.
Drug dealers are operating less in neighborhoods, he said, because "the neighbors don't stand for it."
He also said dealers are becoming more mobile: "If you buy drugs, they'll deliver it."
Instead of meal-delivery services like GrubHub, he said, "We're talking about DrugHub."
Davis identified one of the suspects, Carlos "Chaz" Brown, as a high-level dealer.
One of the mid-level dealers, Roderick Chester, is already in jail, charged with murdering his girlfriend, Davis said.
