'Cherry on top': Drivers on I-75 can expect 'smooth sailing' after this week's final touches, GDOT says

Contractors are continuing to improve the stretch roads of Interstate-75 between exits 149 and 155 that should complete this week, according to the state.

GEORGIA, USA — Driving on uneven roads riddled with potholes might be fun if you're off-roading, but not while going down the interstate.

The frustrations of Central Georgians and other drivers passing through  I-75 dealing with road issues may come to an end this week, according to the state.

"This is the last step, like the frosting on the cake, like the cherry on top," Gina Snider from the Georgia Department of  Transportation said.

According to the state, they're almost finished with the road construction between Exit 149 to Byron and Exit 155 to Sardis Church Road.

"We're gonna smooth it out, and everything should be smooth," she continued. "It's asphalt paving, but  it does need to cure, you know, to dry."

The state told us their goal to complete the project in April was the end of May 2024.

The smooth slabs GDOT construction workers are supposed to install on the road are meant to improve the road issues, Snider said.

Since  13WMAZ last reported, contractors posted signs ahead noting there may be lane closures as they worked on the southbound lanes between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. on weekends.

For the last weekend of May, GDOT still needed to finish the northbound lanes.

As long as the weather didn't affect their work, Snider said GDOT's inspectors and contractors should finish the project by this week.

Wherever you are on the roads, always drive alert and arrive alive. Snider said the construction zones should have signs posted a few miles ahead of the road work. Pay attention to reduced speeds in the area and slow down.
