Downtown Macon art gallery relocates, offers memberships to local artists

The Ampersand Guild was created back in 2016.

An art gallery located in downtown Macon recently relocated from Poplar Street to Cherry Street near the Tubman Museum.

The Ampersand Guild was created about a year and a half ago in 2016, according to the art gallery's director, Daniel Montoute.

It includes a main gallery hall with featured exhibits, a member studio that includes tools and equipment for members to work on projects and a theater.

Montoute says the art gallery was relocated out of necessity as the organization had outgrown the previous space.

The initial owners of the gallery were expecting about 20 members; however, the gallery has grown to 170 members..

"Not only that, I got to get the feedback from the members themselves and hear the things they needed like a better performance stage, more equipment and stuff like that," he added about the relocation.

The Ampersand Guild is now located at 382 Cherry Street and opens from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturdays and by appointment on Sundays. The building is closed each Monday.
