MACON, Ga. — On Saturday, folks could go down to the Douglass theatre in Macon for a chess tournament.
It started at 10 a.m., and was sponsored by the Chess & Community program. Organizers of the event say it was to bring the community together and "show Macon that we have youth that are very engaging with strategic minds."
It is the first time the tournament has been held as part of Kwanzaa celebrations, and is the second overall chess tournament held in Macon.
In addition to the ranked games, there was also the option for free play as well as a community engagement discussion.
Players who did win in the tournament were awarded cash prizes.
After the tournament, players and spectators could stay and watch a screening of the documentary "The Sun Rises in the East" for free with refreshments.
