'It might take a little while' | Macon-Bibb residents slowed down by global Crowdstrike outage

A faulty software update issued by CrowdStrike caused a global tech outage on Friday. Businesses and government offices in Central Georgia were affected.

MACON, Ga. — For Terry Wright, Friday turned out to be an unproductive day.

After a failed trip to the grocery store, Wright also got turned away at the Bibb County Tax office.

"They told me the systems were down and they don't know when they're coming back up," Wright said. "And I asked because I went to one of those machines at the grocery store. They said they were down also."

Businesses and offices like the Macon-Bibb tax office are feeling the effects of the global Crowdstrike outage.

Tax Commissioner Wade McCord says his office remained open on Friday for property tax and garbage payments, but taxpayers looking to make motor vehicle payments must wait until Monday.

"If someone's deadline or expiration is on a weekend, they come in on Mondays without any penalty," McCord said. "So, we're extending that to today, this Friday. So come Monday - no penalty or interest on any type of motor vehicle transaction if the deadline was today."

While many offices are experiencing systems setbacks..., some are still working through the problems, including the Georgia Department of Driver Services. Driver Examiner Carolyn Hugley says the facility still issued driving tests as scheduled.

"We can do the road test itself, but we can't repeat anything in the system," Hugley said. "We can't issue any licenses. So, we just do the road test and have everything saved for later to when the system comes back to issue."

Neither office could say when the systems will be up and running again.

Dr. Alan Stines, professor of IT and Director of Cybersecurity at Middle Georgia State University says the fixes could run into the weekend.

"The problem is that it's a manual fix," Stines said. "So, technicians have to go to every computer that's affected and actually manually boot that computer up in safe mode, delete some files, and then get the newest update that doesn't have the bad update in it. And so, if you're in a company that has thousands of computers, it might take a little while."
