Crisp County officials stressing the importance of preparation as Hurricane Helene approaches

Crisp County Sheriff Billy Hancock says as the storm is approaching it's important to know how to keep yourself safe.

CRISP COUNTY, Ga. — With Hurricane Helene approaching, it's important to know how to keep yourself safe.

Crisp County officials are trying to make sure people know what to do when strong winds and rains come through.

As the storm rolls through, many people are worried about damage to property, but Sheriff Billy Hancock says people are his priority.

“Most people have someplace to go,” Hancock said.

Sheriff Hancock recommends people have canned goods and batteries on hand, especially since it's unclear how long people could be without power. He's also reminding folks to keep their devices charged in case they need to call for help.

“Do you have alternate ways to get your information if something is happening in your community?” Hancock said.

Hancock said preparation is key in keeping your home safe and secure during severe storms.

“Now is the time to prepare," Hancock said. "Not only should you be making sure your home is safe, but picking up items that can be blown around - trash cans, flowerpots, outdoor chairs [and] moving those to a secure area."

Emergency Management Director David Edwards says they are normally short-staffed, but for the next 72 hours they will have the whole crew ready to go.

“We will have 10-12 people here tomorrow night, depending on Friday morning,” Edwards said.

He wants his team to respond quickly when they're needed after Helene passes.

“We operate 3 ambulances a day, 24 hours a day, but we'll go up to 5 or 6 [ambulances],” Edwards said.

The Georgia Insurance Commissioner says if the hurricane is projected to impact your home, you should list your valuables, furniture, electronics and keep them in a safe place. If you file a claim with your insurance company, keep auto and homeowners' policy numbers and your agent's number in a safe space as well.
