Committee pushes harder for community pool after recent Baldwin County drowning

After a recent drowning in the Oconee River Greenway, Aquatics Committee Chairman, Jason Arnold, says the need for a public pool is greater than ever.

In February, the Baldwin County Aquatic Committee began campaigning to bring a pool to Milledgeville.

After a recent drowning in the Oconee River Greenway, Chairman Jason Arnold says the need for a public pool is greater than ever.

"We have a generation of kids that have grown up without a municipal swimming pool," says Arnold.

In school, kids learn how to play sports, but with no public pool, Arnold there isn't a place for them to learn how to swim properly.

"We definitely want the children of Milledgeville to have the opportunity to learn how to swim, and they do not have this opportunity at this time," says Arnold.

According to Arnold, the last public pool in Baldwin closed in the late '90s because it was too expensive to keep up with repairs.

Arnold says building a public pool could help prevent another tragedy like the recent drowning of a GMC student in the Oconee River Greenway.

"I don't want another tragedy like this to happen and the committee is the exact same way," says Arnold.

Arnold says the committee first proposed building a pool to bring the community a place to exercise and socialize, but now they also see the pool as a place for people to learn how to stay afloat.

"When you have tragedies like this in our lakes and river systems, it just makes the need that much greater," says Arnold.

Arnold says the committee is working with the Baldwin School Board, county commissioners, and Milledgeville city council to move the planning process along and they hope to scout locations within a few weeks.

Arnold says they plan to have a "mock-up" of the facility to present to the public sometime in the fall.
