78-year-old driver who was killed after tree fell onto car amid storms in Clayton County identified

The Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office identified the man as Herbert Lee Williams, 78, of Fayetteville.

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — A 78-year-old man was killed after a tree fell onto a car during an accident in Clayton County as strong winds and storms move through metro Atlanta early Tuesday morning, police said.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office identified the man as Herbert Lee Williams, 78, of Fayetteville.

Details are limited, but police added that the tree fell on a vehicle at the Intersection of Highway 54/Fayetteville Road and Jenni Lane during a wreck just before 9:50 a.m.

Clayton County Police later released in an update that as Williams was traveling eastbound on the highway, a tree fell and hit his car killing him on impact. No one else was in the car, according to police.

The death comes as strong winds and flooding continue to ravage the area as a line of severe weather moved through metro Atlanta.

There's a level 1 risk for severe storms along the I-85 corridor south and east of the interstate. There's also a level 2 risk a little more south, including Putnam, Butts, Jasper, Pike, Lamar and Upson counties.

Although tornado warnings have since expired, 11Alive StormTracker meteorologists are warning residents to be careful of moderately flooded roads and storm damage - including fallen trees.
