PERRY, Ga. — When Sedrick Swan took the position as Director of the City of Perry's Leisure Services in August, he came in with a plan.
"There's been a trend in recreation throughout the nation. Many of the participants are interested in more than just athletics," Swan said.
"We had new people come into the community who were interested in programs that we did not offer that they had in their prior community," Supervisor Nancy Graham said.
"We thought that we need to focus heavily on programming for the upcoming months and years to come," Swan said.
Swan and Graham worked with instructors who cover a wide range of subjects and live in the area to present their course information to the public.
"We wanted to make sure that our program offerings touched each one of those areas. So social services, educational, and an enrichment side, etiquette classes, and how to tie a tie, professional dress," Swan said.
"Flight simulation, business development, crafts, jewelry making, yoga," Graham said.
Swan says using their resources for more than sports gives families more opportunities to spend time together.
"We're looking to offer classes for all ages. From 3-years-old all the way up. Some mommy-and-me programs," he said.
"We envision that the whole family can come out and take part in the services we have to offer," Graham said.
Swan says classes start February 1st. He says the times are based on the instructor's schedule. They're also extending their hours to 9 p.m.
Some classes will be free, but some will have a fee depending on whether it needs supplies.
