MACON, Ga. —
United in Pink, a breast cancer nonprofit, is holding its 11th annual Kids in Pink summer day camp at Mabel White Baptist Church on June 10-14.
All of these kids have one thing in common -- their mothers have been diagnosed with breast cancer. That’s why United in Pink organized the UiP Kids Camp.
The camp gives these kids a week to have fun and release some energy.
“A breast cancer diagnosis can be really tough, not only on the survivor or the patient, but also on the children and the caregivers. The Kids in Pink camp gives the kids an opportunity to relate with some other kids of survivors,” said Zandra Wilkerson, a breast cancer survivor of five years.
United in Pink started in 2007 by Laura Paxton, the executive director, and her mother who is a 15-year survivor. United in Pink started the summer camp in Central Georgia in 2008.
“We’re here to work with every member of the family. We realize that the impact of breast cancer is vast,” Paxton said. “We have programs and services geared for everyone in the family -- for the survivor, for the caregiver, and, of course, for the children.”
Camp activities include dancing, singing, arts and crafts, among others.
The kids are in for a special treat Tuesday afternoon. NASCAR driver Ryan Newman is scheduled to visit the Kids in Pink Camp around 2:30 p.m.
