Chief: Crews battling fully-involved fire at a vacant warehouse in downtown Macon

Chief Shane Edwards said that around 7:30 a.m., people spotted smoke coming from a warehouse located at 5th Street and Pine Street.

MACON, Ga. — The Macon-Bibb Fire Department is working a fire at a vacant warehouse in downtown Macon and is asking people to avoid the area for the next few hours.

Chief Shane Edwards said that around 7:30 a.m., people spotted smoke coming from a warehouse located at 5th Street and Pine Street.

When crews arrived on the scene a few minutes later, they found it was fully involved as the fire was breaking through the roof, and the structure was starting to collapse.

He said they didn’t know what caused the fire, but they could rule out electrical fire as a possible cause as the building didn’t have power.

They expect crews to be on the scene til at least noon. Edwards asks that folks stay out of the area until they can finish putting out the fire.
