MACON, Ga. — Part of Rosalynn Carter's procession drove through Central Georgia. The motorcade passed through Butler, Fort Valley, Byron, and Forsyth as it made its way to the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library in Atlanta.
In Macon, people gathered near I-75 to pay their respects. Several people watched from the Sardis Church Road overpass saying they didn't want to miss the historic moment.
Carol Martin says she had chills as she saw the procession.
"I had a dear friend that was Rosalynn Carter's hairdresser. We love making people beautiful. I'm a hairdresser also. It was just a pleasure that we physically got to meet, and to beautify that job of being a first lady," Martin said.
She says she wanted to come pay her respects to the beautiful woman she was fortunate enough to meet. Martin was in Plains last week when she heard of the First Lady's death.
"It was just a real somber occasion. Just to ride down the same roads, and go visit the place where their home was. She was still there and her family. It was a beautiful day," Martin said.
Martin says she tries to see every president who's stopped by Macon, including Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan, Richard Nixon and more.
She says she came out to honor Mrs. Carter and keep up the tradition.
Carter's motorcade was en route to the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library in Atlanta where Carter was laid in repose. There, the public was invited to pay their respect to Carter.
On Tuesday, there will be a memorial for Carter in Atlanta. Then, on Wednesday, her funeral will take place in Plains and she will be buried on the Carter's property.
In Sumter County, residents in Americus gathered to remember the life of Rosalynn Carter as the motorcade made its way to Atlanta. They also remembered Carter and her "warm" personality and her impact on the community only 10 miles from the Carter's home in Plains.
