Central Georgia was recently named to the 2019 class of Great American Defense Communities.
The award recognizes communities for supporting the military financially and physically.
The group handing out the honor said the Central Georgia community donated land and other support to establish the VECTR Center that aids veterans in need.
Mercer University, the Middle Georgia STEM Alliance, and other colleges in the area also had a role to play in the award.
21st Century Partnership president and CEO Chrissy Miner says this is a sign that the community is headed in the right direction.
"The significance of this award is getting national level recognition of the great things that are happening in this community and at Robins Air Force Base and how we are doing things to just better the community and the base as a whole," Miner said.
Communities are chosen through a nomination process based on several criteria including community and family support along with employment opportunities.
