CENTERVILLE, Georgia — The Centerville Fire Department says they're still investigating the cause of a fire that destroyed one man’s home.
Fred Sterdivant's home of more than 10 years is gone after a fire broke out somewhere in the house Sunday night.
“I thought to try to run back in and get my phone, but at that time I saw the smoke coming out of the house and my brother he told me it wasn't worth it [and] to forget it, so I stopped,” he said.
Centerville Fire Chief Jason Jones says they got the call around 5:30 p.m. and by the time they arrived, the fire had spread throughout the home. It took them hours to put out in the near 100-degree heat.
Sterdivant says he's still trying to figure out what to do next and he’s thankful to have his life.
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined. Jones says they do not suspect foul play and he considers the home to be a total loss.
