Burglar who shot, killed burglar while stealing TV identified as Macon teen, deputies say

Bibb deputies say they've identified the suspected burglar who shot and killed his alleged accomplice during a Macon burglary Monday.

They say he is 16-year-old Aurie Mathis. He is accused of shooting a man to death during a burglary at 152 Bradstone Circle. The man he shot was his alleged cohort, James Robert Young, 41.

They were trying to steal a television from the home, according to Bibb County Sheriff David Davis.

The owner of the home woke up to find Mathis and Young in her home carrying the TV, Davis said.

"She was startled and hollered at the intruders," Davis said Monday.

"When she yelled, the men ran out," Davis said. "As they went out the door, one of the suspects turned around and fired one shot backwards and struck the other suspect in the head."

Mathis is described as 5 feet 6 inches and 140 pounds. Authorities say anyone that sees him should not attempt to approach him, as he may be armed with a gun.

Young is no stranger to local law men. He's been in the Bibb County jail 35 times - six of those were for burglary.

The State Public Corrections website says Young was in prison for burglary for four years until August 2016.

Anyone with information on Mathis' whereabouts is urged to call the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office at 478-751-7500, or call Macon Regional Crimestoppers at 1-877-68CRIME.
