'It will be great for the community' | Buc-ee's considering new store in Monroe County

The company says they have plenty of work ahead and more planning to do but they're excited about the opportunity to come to Monroe County.

MONROE COUNTY, Ga. — Central Georgians could eventually have another spot to grab beaver nuggets and brisket.

The popular southern chain Buc-ee's told 13WMAZ they're actively pursuing a store in Monroe County. The company says they have plenty of work ahead and more planning to do, but they're excited about the opportunity to come to Monroe County.

David Thompson says he and his family hope the development gets the green light.

“We love Buc-ees, and we think that being in this community will definitely help with jobs and make prices more affordable for gas and things like that,” Thompson said.

He says having a Buc-ees close by his gun club will be an added bonus.

“I'm excited to be able to get some food pretty quick, and to be able to maybe take the cart and fill it up with gas and get diesel for my truck,” Thompson said.

Buc-ee's confirmed they have their eyes on land near Rumble Road off I-75 in Monroe County. The company says they expect to create 200 full-time jobs with benefits.

Richard Dumas, the public information officer for Monroe County says a meeting was held last month between county staff and Buc-ees leaders to outline plans for a 74,000 square foot facility.

“Buc-ee's company reached out to Monroe County," Dumas said. "I think they've been looking at the site for almost a year. It's supposed to have 120 gas pumps, fueling stations."

Dumas says bringing the development to the area is a big topic.

“Some people are worried about the traffic, and some people are excited about it being here, and so we'll just have to see what's best for Monroe County,” Dumas said.

Next the company will present its proposal to the zoning board and in December commissioners will decide whether to approve the store.
