UPDATE, 6:10 p.m.:
The state Department of Natural Resources and other agencies put a boat in the river near Highway 96 and also launched a helicopter search.
Houston County fire chief Chris Stoner says they finally sighted the item from the air and determined it wasn't a body -- it was a trash can. He says they called off the search within the past hour.
So far, no word on how the trash can got in the river or where it's headed.
