CHAUNCEY, Ga. — A 29-year-old man is dead after a Saturday morning car crash in Dodge County, marking the second car crash death in Central Georgia over the Thanksgiving travel period, according to the Georgia State Patrol.
Jamarius Raekwon Black of Chauncey was traveling in a Kia Cadenza down Georgia Highway 165. Then, as he was making a turn near Yawn Lane, Georgia State Patrol says he drove off the road and struck a tree in the driver's side headlight area.
They say it happened at around 7:15 a.m. on Saturday.
The state patrol says that Black was pronounced dead by the Dodge County Coroner Joe Smith. He says that when he arrived on the scene, the car had suffered "severe" damage.
Smith says he really doesn't know what happened. At this time, Smith says his office conducted a toxicology report, and they are waiting for the results to come back.
Statewide, 17 people have died on the road during the course of the Thanksgiving travel season as of Monday morning, including two in Central Georgia.
During the early hours of Thanksgiving morning, 40-year-old Decarlos Sheppard died in a Lamar County crash after apparently falling asleep at the wheel, Lamar County Coroner Clay Tillery said.
