Bleckley County first responders come to rescue of seizing baby

One Central Georgia mom says her Thursday started out like just a normal weekday. Then, her daughter started seizing and turned blue.

COCHRAN, Ga. — On Sunday, Haven Floyd is back to being her usual, bubbly self.

But it was a different story last month when she started seizing for the first time.

Kendell Floyd was about to give her daughter a bath when things went south.

"She started seizing so you know, I immediately grabbed her 'cause she was in the water, and freaked out and yelled for my husband," Floyd said.

It turned out that her daughter caught COVID-19, which spiked a fever, causing the seizures.

"I mean I remember not even remembering how to unlock my phone to call 911 'cause I was freaking out so bad," Floyd said.

Deputies Douglas Denmark and Chandler Laird with the Bleckley County Sheriff's Office immediately rushed over.

"I got three of my own, and at a time like that, I wish somebody would you know- if something happens to my young ones, I wish somebody would be there to help mine too," Denmark said.

Mathew Francis, who volunteers with the Bleckley County Fire Department, was at home when the call came in.

"When the call originally came out you could hear the frantic in the dispatcher's voice. And I was with my wife at the time. I grabbed my radio; I said I don't know what it is, but I'm gonna go to it no matter what," Francis said.

The men worked together to jump into action.

While one of them drove, one of them held baby Floyd, and then the third person escorted the patrol car.

"I said we're going to the hospital. It doesn't matter where we gotta go if we have to go to Macon, it doesn't matter," Denmark said.

Laird's son was 11-months-old at the time and said baby Floyd reminded him so much of his child.

"I never knew my like, love for children until I honestly, until I got into the job. And then going from there like that night was just- I gotta see this through. So like I saw the baby when it wasn't doing so well, I gotta see it when it's at its best," Laird said.

Once they handed baby Floyd over to the nurses at the hospital, they didn't stop there.

"What made it stand out the most was they stayed the whole time that we were there. And they stayed over and checked on her afterward and you know that that meant a lot to us," Floyd said.

Because of their quick actions that day, Floyd said her daughter will grow up always remembering the story of the three first responders who helped save her life.
