MACON, Ga. — Bibb County's sheriff says a man shot himself as officers tried to talk to him about the four men who escaped from the Bibb County Jail a week ago.
Bibb deputies on Monday responded to a tip at an apartment building in the 2000 block of Vineville Avenue, according to Sheriff David Davis.
As officers entered the building, Davis says a man fired shots at US Marshals and then shot himself. The man is wounded and being treated at a Macon hospital.
The man's name has not been released.
Davis says he is not one of the four men who escaped from the Bibb County Jail a week ago. But the sheriff says they're investigating whether he is connected to those four fugitives.
The sheriff said, "Let me make that clear-- he is not one of our escapees. But, he is a person that, we feel, has knowledge of where they might be, that has knowledge of the escape, and who has some connection to at least one or two of the people we're looking for."
Around 7 a.m. Monday, the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force tried to enter an apartment at The Pines on Vineville at 2020 Vineville Avenue.
Davis says the first gunshot was through the door from the inside of the apartment at marshals.
They stepped back and then called a SWAT Team.
Davis said the officers did not fire any shots.
Another person inside the apartment then opened the apartment door and led law enforcement to the person who was injured., Davis said.
