MACON, Ga. — The Bibb County Sheriff's office is asking people to refrain from celebratory gunfire during New Year's Eve celebrations.
In a release, they said that celebratory gunfire is defined as “shooting a firearm into the air in celebration," and it is against the law.
They also reminded folks that shooting a firearm 50 yards from a public street or highway are both against the law.
They said that when you fire a bullet up into the air, it can reach high rates of speed falling back down to earth. This can damage property, cause personal injury, or even death.
The release also reminded folks to be safe when using fireworks.
Fireworks are allowed between 10 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. on New Year's Eve, and and from 12 midnight to 1 a.m. on New Year's Day.
They say adults should always be around during the use of fireworks, and they should not be left unattended.
Bibb County deputies will be out on patrol on new year's Eve, and the release said they would be paying extra attention to people who are reckless with fireworks and firearms and will also be patrolling the roads for drunk drivers.
They said they wanted everyone to "have a safe and Happy New Year’s celebration."
If anyone hears gunfire or sees anything suspicious, they can call the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office at 478-751-7500.
