MACON, Ga. — The chaplain at Piedmont Macon, Tabatha Barnett, is there for families during some of their most trying times.
"I've dealt with families that have dealt with a suicide and people who have attempted suicide," says Barnett.
Barnett had to deal with the death of her nephew Carlyle Miller. Miller died by suicide several years ago by shooting himself.
"Shock is beyond the word. There was a great sadness among my family. He has two young boys now living without their father," explained Barnett.
People battling suicidal thoughts or attempts is not new to Barnett.
"I see it a lot. I think a lot of people are suffering," says Barnett.
According to Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones suicides in Bibb County have risen slightly. In 2022 the county faced 25 suicides and in 2023 that number increased to 27.
"Whatever it is ask for help. Don't sit there alone and be in the darkness," says Barnett.
The CDC says suicide is a leading cause of death. Being connected to family, having community support, and having easy access to health care can decrease suicidal thoughts and behaviors.
"When you see someone suffering and it doesn't seem to change please get them some help, listen to them, support them and don't push them to the side," says Barnett.
You can get help and resources from the suicide and crisis lifeline by dialing 988. Piedmont Macon has a Helping Hands Grief Support Group. The group meets Mondays at 2:30pm every week.
