Schools are still out for the summer, but one Macon-Bibb County elementary school opened its library doors Tuesday to help students finish their summer reading.
Bernd Elementary School decided to open its library to students for three days over the summer since several of Macon-Bibb County’s libraries are still closed while waiting on funding from the county.
Principal Chad Thompson says that when he heard the libraries in the county weren’t being funded, he wanted to do something to help his students continue to grow as readers.
"We saw that there was going to be a problem with summer reading. They have requirements for summer reading and we saw that the summer reading was not going to be completed because they wouldn’t be able to go to the library," said Thompson.
Only Bernd Elementary students will be able to check out books, but anyone is welcome to come and read books in the library as well.
Students can visit the school’s library again on July 17 and 24 from 10 a.m. to noon.
