Bibb County landfill passes inspection after past violations

Back in March, the Environmental Protection Agency scored the landfill a 50 out of 100.

Bibb County commissioners announced Tuesday that Macon's landfill scored a 95 on their latest inspection. They needed over an 80 to avoid fines.

Back in March, the Environmental Protection Agency scored the landfill a 50 out of 100. There were violations like exposed trash, standing water ponds, and using a spray epoxy to cover trash instead of dirt, which is against daily cover guidelines.

Bibb County Manager Keith Moffett said the Solid Waste Department had already been taking steps to fix some of the problems, such as correctly covering over the trash each day, handling pools of standing water, and installing directional signs.

The last time the landfill received a failing score of 75 was back in April of 2016. The county received an $8,000 fine in 2017. They say that was their only fine in the last 5 years.

The landfill, in its current location, is expected to close by 2023.
