Better crosswalks and less bumpy roads are expected to come to downtown Macon.
Macon-Bibb commissioners recently approved more grant funding geared towards fixing some of these current issues.
The grant money will go towards asphalt repairs along First Street near the Navicent Heart Health building, four roundabouts on Rice Mill Road near Eisenhower Parkway and a new crosswalk at the intersection of Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and Cherry Street.
Driving down First Street in downtown Macon, the ride can get a little bumpy.
And if you cross Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard onto Cherry Street, you might step in a puddle.
Meagan Jenkins, manager for the Greek Bar and Grill, says she knows the spots she has to avoid on her walk to work.
“I can’t tell you have many times leaving work or coming to work I’ve almost fallen or busted my toe,” said Jenkins.
Jenkins says Macon-Bibb paying to patch the roads and fix the crosswalks show a level of dedication to downtown businesses.
“It’s very supporting, and that's what I wanted to see is people coming together to make it better and not just ignore it and pretend it's not going to get better,” said Jenkins.
The total project cost is over $164,000 from a local maintenance and improvement grant.
That's not the only money being put into downtown.
Earlier this year commissioners approved of spending $1.5 million of grant money for improvements along Second Street.
”So many people are putting their effort into making it better down here, so we need to enjoy it,” said Jenkins.
With all of the money going into downtown, Jenkins says it's heading in a good direction.
