MACON, Ga. — Bibb County has agreed to pay a $50,000 to settle health violations at their animal shelter, but the fine will be suspended if Bibb County doesn’t commit any more violations over the next three years.
That’s according to a proposed consent order between the county and the state Department of Agriculture.
“It’s not like the county is going to spend out $50,000. It’s just like a suspended fine, pending, to make the upgrades and all the work that needed to be done at the shelter will be done,” said Bibb County Sheriff David Davis.
The violations came out of an October visit by state inspectors. According to the order, they found problems with cleanliness, ventilation, food storage, a rodent problem and more. They also found 128 dogs and 48 cats at the shelter. The legal limit is 80 dogs and 40 cats.
Bibb County agreed not to exceed its legal limit. They also will agree to spend at least $15,000 for health and safety improvements at the shelter.
If Bibb County violates the agreement, they’ll have to pay the $50,000 fine and their shelter license will be revoked.
The consent order is scheduled to go before county commissioners Tuesday for approval.
