Woman shot by deputies in Baldwin County after they say she attacked with a hammer, charged

The woman, identified as Fiesta Murphy, attacked one of the deputies with a hammer.

BALDWIN COUNTY, Ga. — Baldwin County deputies and the GBI are investigating after a woman was hurt in officer-involved shooting that happened late Tuesday afternoon.

According to Sheriff Bill Massee with the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office, the call came in about a break-in at Antioch Baptist Church on Old Monticello Road. Two deputies went to investigate at the church.

Deputies entered the church to make sure no one was inside. A woman, later identified as 48-year-old Fiesta Murphy, attacked one of the deputies with a hammer, according to a report from the GBI.

The deputy blocked his head with his arm and the hammer hit his arm. The deputies tried to get Murphy to drop the hammer. She attempted to attack a second time. The deputies fired shots and hit Murphy. The deputies administered aid until EMS arrived.

Murphy was taken to Atrium Health Navicent, The Medical Center in Macon for treatment. Her condition is unknown at this time.

She has been charged with Burglary and Arson.

Massee says Murphy was previously arrested on criminal trespassing charges and was released from the Baldwin County jail on December 9.

The case is being investigated by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

This is the 109th officer-involved shooting the GBI has been asked to investigate in 2022.
