An Appling County High School student was hospitalized Monday after he shot himself at the school.
WTOC in Savannah reports that a 16-year-old male student was found alone in the bathroom of the school’s fine arts building with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
They report that the school was placed on lockdown by law enforcement until they determined no one else was involved.
GBI Special Agent Mark Pro said, “At this time, there is no evidence to believe this is anything other than an isolated incident.”
The high school dismissed students early. The identity and condition of the student has not been released.
A statement from the school system can be read below:
We wanted to provide an update on the incident today at Appling County High School. This was an isolated incident involving one student.
As a result of the incident, the student was transported to the hospital and then transported to Savannah.
Law Enforcement secured the campus and an assembly was held to assure students and staff of their safety. Counseling services were initiated and will continue to be provided as needed.
ACHS students were dismissed early due to the incident.
Appling County School System would like to offer our most sincere gratitude to the students, staff and law enforcement and community emergency personnel for assistance with this day’s event.
All students will return to school on Tuesday, September 25th to resume the normal schedule. Law enforcement will be highly visible throughout the school system.
