Police in Americus are teaming up with the GBI and the FBI to track down people who are making threatening posts toward their police force and the families of fallen officers Jody Smith and Nicholas Smarr online, according to Americus Chief of Police Mark Scott.
Scott said they received threats after a suspect shot and killed the two officers before killing himself.
Scott said people have made the threats toward his police force, the families of the fallen officers and the family of suspect Minquell Lembrick through social media
Scott said that his department is taking the threats very seriously.
"Anything that crosses the line in the criminal activity, which is something that's particularly threatening or names a specific person and threatens that person, that is illegal," Scott said. "So we will identify who that person is and we will prosecute."
Scott added that many hundreds of people have reached out to his department to offer support. There will be mandatory counseling next week for the officers in his department.
