7-year-old with autism dies after being hit by car on Highway 247

Capt. Ronnie Harlowe with the Houston County Sheriff's Office confirms the child passed away

HOUSTON COUNTY, Ga. — A 7-year-old with Autism that was hit by a car on Highway 247 in Houston County Saturday has passed away.

While Capt. Ronnie Harlowe with the Houston County Sheriff's Office could not confirm the child's identity due to ongoing investigations, 13WMAZ confirmed with family members that it was 7-year-old Luna Winstead.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for her funeral expenses. A description on the page says Luna was 'sweet, a runner, and adventurous.'

Family members say she was visiting other relatives when she got out of the house.

Part of Highway 247 had to be shut down Saturday night between Booth Road and Sandy Run after the accident, according to Harlowe.

The name of the driver has not been released at this time.
