5th Mob to help with hurricane recovery at Tyndall Air Force Base in Fla.

The 5th Mob will set up communications and try to get Tyndall back on its feet in the wake of Hurricane Michael.

The Florida Panhandle is still reeling after Hurricane Michael, and that includes Tyndall Air Force Base outside Panama City.

The 5th Combat Communications group at Robins Air Force Base will play a key role in helping out their fellow airmen.

Technical Sergeant Clark Benefield is preparing for the latest mission.

"It kind of hits me personally -- I"ve been here 30 days and that's the base I came from," he said.

The 5th Combat Communications group will spend at least the next two weeks helping out the folks at Tyndall Air Force Base.

"The Tyndall community is very, very tight-knit -- they all themselves Team Tyndall," Benefield recalled.

The base outside Panama City put on their Facebook page that they sustained extensive damage. Commander Derek Huber says they are in a world of hurt.

"It's heartbreaking to know that's here on our shores, but it's something that we're ready for or trained and ready to support," he said.

The group loaded 5 semi trucks worth of stuff Friday. Most of it will be used to get the communication up and going at Tyndall, and that will help countless others suffering in Michael's aftermath.

"It also opens up the base -- the base will be able to start limited operations so they can bring in aircraft bring in those relief efforts," Huber said.

Commander Huber says the 5th Mob is the only active duty unit responding.

"The benefit of Robins being up the road is we can always send reinforcements," Huber projected.

"It makes me feel good to go back and support the people I was with the last four years," Benefield said with a smile.
