28-year-old Macon man nominated for Tony Award

Grey Henson grew up in Macon performing at Theater Macon and other venues where he said he started his love of performing.

A Macon man has been nominated for a Tony Award for his role in Tina Fey’s musical Mean Girls. He got his start in local theater and is now a nominee for Broadway's biggest prize. He says that his love of theater started right here in Macon.

Grey’s parents Paige and Johnny Henson still live in Macon. They say they’re very proud of their son for his accomplishments and ability to stay humble.

He plays the part of Damian, a gay best friend to the lead Cady Herring. Grey says he wanted to bring something different to the character. “Growing up, I was a lot like Damian. I'm definitely openly gay and I’m feminine and stuff, but it doesn't really define me,” said Grey.

He says that he wanted to break stereotypes with his performance, interpreting the movie character to as a good friend with more to him than his sexuality. He says he couldn't have done it without his teachers in Macon.

“I really have to pinch myself because it was just a hobby of mine I pursued as a kid in Macon, and now I get paid to do it, so it's really thrilling,” said Grey.

On opening night of the show, Johnny and Paige made a trip up to see Grey. Johnny was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer this year and was in the middle of chemotherapy, but the diagnosis has made them appreciate good news.

“We certainly have learned to appreciate the smaller things as well as the amazing things like a Tony nomination,” said Paige.

Grey says his parents' continued support and the support of the Macon community have helped him to be where is today.
