17th annual Ocmulgee Alive river cleanup kicks off at Spring Street boat ramp

Macon's annual waterway cleanup is one of the largest in the state in terms of volunteers.

MACON, Ga. — On Saturday folks all over Macon could participate in the 17th annual Ocmulgee Alive cleanup of Macon's waterways.

The annual Georgia Rivers Alive cleanup is one one of the largest in Georgia in terms of volunteers.

The event began at 8:30 a.m., and volunteers met in locations all over the county to start cleaning. Some included Vineville Branch in Riverside Cemetery, Rocky Creek Road, Joe Tamplin Boulevard, Williamson Road, Beaverdam Creek, and the Spring Street Boat Ramp.

Several individuals as well as organizations came out to pick up some trash, including Mount de Sales Academy, Stratford Academy, Tattnall Square Academy, Royal Science Club, and the Riverside Cemetery and Conservancy.

Organizers say the reason behind the cleanup was to create involvement in the preservation of water resources, and recognize the importance of water quality to the quality of life and economic development in Bibb County.

In addition to being a popular source of outdoor recreation, the Ocmulgee River is a primary source of raw water for producing MWA tap water, which was voted Best Tasting Drinking Water in Georgia this year.

Folks certainly helped to uphold that status as they filled several large trash bags with anything and everything floating in the riverbeds and waterways.

There were over 140 volunteers cleaning up in total, and the cleanup lasted until 11:30 a.m.
