13WMAZ celebrates 65 years: Straight from the Archives

We're celebrating our 65th birthday by sharing decades of archive footage

13WMAZ first hit the airwaves on this date in 1953, making us Central Georgia's first (and therefore oldest) TV news station.

Over the last 65 years, many careers have been launched right here in the 'Heart of Georgia,' so we're celebrating today by digitizing things from our archive and tape rooms. Some of them have never been aired or put online before today!

So tie on your shoes because we're about to take a trip down memory lane...

1953: Residents of Houston County discussed their memories of the EF-4 tornado that ripped through the county in 1953.

1977: The University of Georgia Dixie Redcoats marching band faced off against the Georgia Tech marching band at their rival game.

Early 1980s: Frank Malloy wasn't the best at sports growing up. Thankfully, he was good at sports reporting.

1983: We celebrated our 30th anniversary with a 30-minute special back in 1983. The news station went on the air for the first time on Sept. 27, 1953.

1984: Shoppers at the Macon Mall went crazy for the Cabbage Patch dolls, especially near Christmas time.

1985: Chuck Englund ran through local headlines in this news break from May 9, 1985.

1987: In '87, the Cherry Blossom was only in its fifth year. Here's what it looked like.

1988: WMAZ celebrated their 35th birthday with this promo that was 'straight from the heart.'

1988: This special took a look back at Macon in the early 1960's during the troubled years and the birth of the civil rights movements.

1989: Here's a promo for a January 1989 edition of 'Date with Del' with host Del Ward.

1989: This clips is an almost 30-year-old show open with Chuck Englund, Tina Hicks, Frank Malloy and Bill Powell.

1991: 13WMAZ's Raymond Tubb spoke with former Macon Police Chief Jim Brooks Jr. following his resignation.

1993: Remember these commercials? This commercial break featured promos for the now-closed Wiggins dealership in Warner Robins, Meineke and A Current Affair.

1994: Rains from Tropical Storm Alberto flooded several parts of Central Georgia. In an almost hour-long special, 13WMAZ's team recalled the disaster.

1995: For many years, General Manager Don McGouirk delivered station editorials. This one commended state leaders for creating and launching Georgia’s Pre-K program.

1995: This 13WMAZ special highlighted the history of the city at the height of the Great Depression in the 1930s.

1995: Back then, the Allman Brothers Band Museum, 'the Big House,' was in its planning stages.

1996: 13WMAZ's Suzanne Lawler reported live from Atlanta and recounted the sights and sounds of the Olympics' opening ceremony.

1996: While the Olympics' opening ceremony in Atlanta was beautiful, Suzanne Lawler was also there to speak to those affected by the bombing that killed one and injured more than 100.

1996: When Bill Clinton visited Macon on a campaign stop, our Junior Journalists were there to interview him.

1998: In this severe weather special, 13's Sky Watch weather team, featuring Meteorologist Bill Powell, told viewers what they needed to know if severe weather strikes.

1983: For decades Central Georgians had a 'Date with Del.' Del Ward was important to the development of 13WMAZ.

1999: Macon's annual Bragg Jam Festival wasn't always the huge event you see today. Here's how it started.

1999: Bellsouth and other Central Georgia phone companies worked to update and upgrade phone systems in preparation of Y2K.

1999: In preparation for the new century, Maconites told us their New Year's resolutions.

2000: 13WMAZ recounted some of the biggest weather events of the century in three minutes.

2005: In the days following Tara Grinstead's disappearance, 13WMAZ spoke to friends of the Irwin County beauty queen and teacher about their hopes for her safe return.

2007: Oprah visited Macon to film her Favorite Things episode.

2008: Two security cameras captured the torrential downpour and winds of the storm that caused the Mother's Day tornado in Bibb County.

2010: Frank Malloy, Lorra Lynch-Jones, Ben Jones and Suzanne Lawler discuss what the station's slogan, 'Straight from the Heart,' means to them.

2012: People in Forsyth gathered to witness Grits Cafe, a downtown staple, burn down in 2012.

2013: In 2012, a Macon Police officer shot an unarmed man--Sammy "Junebug" Davis--in the parking lot of a Macon Kroger. Here is the one-year anniversary report of the shooting.
