1,000 books before Kindergarten graduation

Kids ages 1 to 5 celebrated reading 1,000 books or more before kindergarten with a graduation ceremony at Washington Library.

The Washington Library in Macon held a special graduation ceremony on Saturday.

Kids from ages 1 to 5 were given caps and gowns to gear up for graduation.

Their recognition celebrated that the children have had at least 1,000 books read to them, all before Kindergarten.

It's all part of the Books before Kindergarten program with the Middle Georgia Regional Library.

Research says reading 1,000 books before a child enters Kindergarten is supposed to make them more ready to learn.

Kevin Reig is one of the graduates' grandfather and says the benefits go beyond kindergarten.

"It's a great start for the kids in reading, it's such an excellent habit for them to start and something that will last a life time," Reig said.

His grandson Walden is one of the graduates, and says of all the books he's been read, one book is his favorite.

"Curious George," Walden said.

This is the third year the program has been in place.

There were twelve graduates at today's ceremony.
