I-75/I-16 interchange name change pulled from Bibb Commission schedule

A resolution proposed the interchange be named after David Lucas, who has represented Macon for more than 40 years in the General Assembly

MACON, Ga. — UPDATE: 5:15 p.m.

The resolution to rename the interchange is being pulled from the commission's schedule.

According to Penny Brooks with the Georgia Department of Transportation, the interchange is already named after POW/MIA Major Bobby Jones from the Vietnam War.

Brooks says you can request the state to change or add to the name, but if you want it to be named after someone in a state office, they have to be out of office for at least two years.

Commissioner Larry Schlesinger says the legal department is working with GDOT to see how feasible it is to rename the interchange.

They might introduce a resolution after that.

A massive highway project underway in Macon could get a familiar local name.

Some county commissioners want to name the new I-75/I-16 interchange after David Lucas, who's represented the city in the General Assembly for more than 40 years.

The Bibb County Commission is scheduled to take up a resolution on the matter Tuesday night.

The resolution asks Central Georgia's members of Congress to support the Lucas name at the federal level.

Lucas was first elected to the Georgia House of Representatives for Macon in 1974, then went on to serve in the Georgia State Senate six years ago.

The $380 million interchange project started more than two years ago, and it's scheduled to be completed in 2024.
