Central Georgians have high hopes as Powerball jackpot hits $1 billion

It's only the second time in Powerball's 30-year history the estimated jackpot has been this high

MACON, Ga. — The Powerball has hit $1 billion. It's only the second time in its 30-year history the estimated jackpot has been this high.

The chances of winning the Powerball jackpot is about 1 in 292.2 million.
Powerball says the lucky person who wins could walk away with $497.3 million in cash.

What would Central Georgians do with all that money?

Kalani Von Dyke says, "I just really want to help my mom. I'm going to put it away because I have plans for my future."

For Johnny Cleveland Jr., he would help, "Everybody that ain't got nothing -- every poor man, poor girl -- I'm going to show them love."

Some like Cheryl Johnson may even treat themselves a bit.

"I would take a vacation, me and my husband. Then, I would probably give my kids some money and get us a house," Johnson said.

The jackpot soared after no one matched all six numbers in any drawing since August 3. That makes the Halloween night drawing the fifth largest jackpot in U.S. history, and it has some folks excited about the possibility of entrepreneurship.

Noah Williams says he would help his family and, "I'm going to start a barbecue joint up and I'm hoping to get into the restaurant business. Somebody's got to eat -- why not?"

Carlton Cobb has kids he wants to support.

"It's a million things running through my head, so ain't no telling what I'll do. I have a lot of business ventures I may try," Cobb said.

Others say they simply need a break, like Chance Hodge.

"I'm tired of going to work every day -- that's pretty much it," Hodge said.

To date, Powerball holds the world record for largest jackpot set in 2016 at $1.586 billion. Jackpot winners may choose to receive their prize paid in 30 graduated payments over 29 years, or a lump sum payment.
